Effet par lequel une convention engage une personne dite, la personne représentée, au nom de laquelle une autre dite, le représentant a traité avec un tiers ou ,duquel elle est en droit d'en exiger l'exécution. .

Dans le droit des successions, la représentation est une fiction de la loi, dont l'effet est de faire entrer les représentants dans les droits du représenté. On représente les prédécédés, on ne représente pas les renonçants, on peut représenter celui à la succession duquel on a renoncé.
