Le Sahel (de l'arabe ساحل saḥel signifiant côte ou frontière) désigne une bande de l'Afrique marquant la transition, à la fois floristique et climatique, entre le domaine saharien au nord et les savanes du domaine soudanien (à ne pas confondre avec le pays du même nom), où les pluies sont substantielles, au sud. D'ouest en est, il s'étend de l'Atlantique à la mer Rouge. La définition de la zone couverte est très variable selon les auteurs. Ainsi, pour certains le Sahel comprend tous les territoires bordant le Sahara : il y a donc un Sahel septentrional et un Sahel méridional. C'est ce dernier qui est cependant désigné quand on ne lui ajoute pas de qualificatif.

The Sahel is the ecoclimatic and biogeographic zone of transition in Africa between the Sahara Desert to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south. Having a semi-arid climate, it stretches across the south-central latitudes of Northern Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. The Arabic word sāḥil literally means "shore, coast", describing the appearance of the vegetation found in the Sahel as being akin to that of a coastline delimiting the sand of the Sahara.
